“I feel really privileged to be doing something I love every day, on land that’s been in our family for generations.”

John Evans worked in the family orchard from the time he could reach the fruit and reliably pick it. Today, John, his wife Wendy and their family own and run two orchards covering 80 hectares, including land that’s been in the family since 1906.

“I feel a real sense of heritage and continuity,” said John. “Working alongside family is really important. You’ve got to work at it, but there’s nothing better.”

That family involvement still spans three generations today.

“Both our fathers are still on the tools in the orchard. One of our daughters has a management role – and there’s a cousin in there as well! They’re part of a strong nucleus we have around us to share the challenges and responsibilities.”

That support crew grows each year at harvest time, with the arrival of a team of skilled, motivated workers from the Pacific Islands.

At the end of 2020 the family business completed purpose-built accommodation on the orchard for its Pacific Island team, including internet, Sky TV and a grassed area for sport.

“We wanted to create a home away from home for the team and they love it.

We work hard to create an environment where everyone is respected and valued and we’re fortunate to have these incredible people with us.”

Like all orchardists, John has seen some big changes over the years, particularly around food safety and improved growing systems.

“Kiwis are naturally innovative. We always want to do better and that’s been a real advantage for the industry and our customers.

“When I think about the future, it’s that realisation that food is essential for human existence and New Zealand is perfectly placed to provide safe, quality fruit to the world. I’m really proud to be a part of that.”
