About the Commodity Levy
All growers who sell apples, pears and nashis pay a levy. This is collected by New Zealand Apples and Pears Inc, under the Commodity Levies Act 1990. The maximum level able to be set is 1.5 cents per kilogram sold in New Zealand or exported for sale. The NZAPI Board reviews and sets the rate every year against our operating activities. The current levy is 1.15 cents per kilogram. For the 24/25 year, the NZAPI Board has announced that the commodity levy rate to be called is 1.00 cents per kilogram.
About the Biosecurity Response Levy
Levy Investment
We invest commodity levies into programmes that directly benefit, support and advocate for a better future for our growers based on our strategic priority areas. This includes developing new and maintaining existing market access, crop protection support, research and development to create practical and future-focused solutions, biosecurity readiness, and advocating for our industry with Central and Local Government.
Levy Vote
All growers who pay a levy on apples and pears can vote on whether to continue the levy. A commodity levy is voted on every six years. The last levy vote was in 2024.
